Program
Day 1 and 2. First impression
Welcome to Alaska where our adventure begins. We drive to our base camp for the next few days. Water and mountains surround us. We eat on the beach by a campfire. It's plenty to enjoy here on the bay. We get ready for day 2, a tough hike to an impressive ice field. Once at the top you are rewarded with a view that immediately makes you realize how big Alaska is. Â
Day 3. Out to sea!
We will do what many locals also do, catch your own salmon. Or a halibut. Meanwhile, we'll try to spot animals; whales, orcas, sea otters, seals and bald eagles. And we'll go kayaking. Along the coast and between the ice floes. We try to get as close to the glacier as possible, which is spectacular. How small can you feel in this great country?
Day 4. En route
After yesterday's long day, this morning is a relaxed wake-up and quiet start. Coffee or tea and enjoy the view. There is plenty of time for reflection as we make our way to our next destination. Once there, we get ready for the next 2 days. A nice hike is on the program and weather permitting, we will sleep in nature along the way.  Â
Day 5 and 6. Mountains
We start our hike today! We have plenty of time to climb steadily uphill. This is on trails, but sometimes you have to climb over rocks. It is peaceful here, completely quiet with beautiful views. Depending on the weather, we walk all the way up and spend the night in nature, a fantastic experience.
Day 7 and 8. Bears and such
While we are there, we actively search for bears. Rather see them from a distance and that is exactly what we do. We fly to our destination, a wonderful way to see Alaska from above. It is a full-day program, we see bears from a safe distance. Imposing and impressive. On our last active day, we take a final hike ... on a glacier. A beautiful finale!
Day 9. Sweet Goodbye
We pack our things and enjoy the view one last time. We drive back to Anchorage. On the way, we will have lunch at a special place. At the end of the afternoon, arrive in Anchorage, there we say goodbye.
As the operations manager of a large team, I see daily how people get stuck in habits. "We do it this way because we've always done it this way," I hear over and over again. That frustrates me. I want change, movement. But how do you break through that autopilot?
As a partner in a consulting firm, my work is all about growth. More revenue, more clients, more impact. But while I'm always keen on that, I noticed that sometimes my team didn't have the same speed. They were working hard, but it felt like they were mostly executing what we, the partners, came up with. Pro-activity was a bit on the low side.
As an entrepreneur, I am used to steering my own course. I make my choices based on experience, knowledge and intuition. That has brought me far, but somewhere I felt that something more was possible. When I came across the trip to New Zealand with Blue Lantern, the combination of physical challenge and time for reflection especially attracted me.
I knew something had to change. My days were filled with calling, arranging, pulling on everything and everyone and moving on. My business was running fine, my team was doing its job, yet it felt like everything was resting on me. I was tired. Not just physically, but mostly mentally. I felt like I couldn't let go of control, that everything depended on me.
